Trucker who killed cyclist: “I just couldn’t stop”

We’ve been trying to come up wtih all kinds of reasons why the trucker who killed Emma Blumstein, 24, on Bedford Ave. in Brooklyn Tuesday, could not stop before he hit her.
Apparently he deftly performed a “left cross” in front of Blumstein, who had right of way and was traveling south on Bedford, when he made a left turn in front of her from Empire Boulevard.

We’re also trying to understand why the driver was not charged with careless driving–at least.
See the story on GothamistCrownHeightsInfo.com, and Streetsblog.

Brooklyn, it appears, is becoming one of the most dangerous parts of the city to ride a bicycle.

Why doesn’t the city do something about it? There appears to be a disconnect between the work being accomplished at the DOT under the helm of Janet-Sadik-Khan, and the lack of enforcement, prosecution, and protection by the NYPD and the borough District Attorneys.
