Team Trial Upsets at Stage 2 Tour de France
A new winner will be donning the Yellow Jersey today after the team trial in stage 2 at Les Essarts made it clear that the American Garmin Cervelo team was the fastest team to finish the 23 mostly flat kilometers of the stage.
That win landed the Yellow Jersey to Thor Hushovd who had the first best time over the two days.
Phillipe Gilbert of the Pharma Lotto team lost his Yellow Jersey when his team failed to come in fast enough to retain the Yellow.
The team of Cadel Evans BMC Racing came in second, landing the Aussie rider the third place placement in the general classification. “Very happy with the (Bmc) boys today! Small mistake at the start cost us a better result. That’s racing….plenty more to come,” wrote Evans on his Twitter account.
Geraint Thomas was not far behind, now in fourth position overall, a great place for the young rider who carries the White Jersey, for best young rider.
Team Leopard Trek now has four riders in the top 10, including Andy and Frank Schleck, Linus Gerdemann, and Fabian Cancellara.
Wrote Cancellara on his Twitter page, “Thanks to all great team effort from all…. We happy about it… It was close. TTT is just beautiful and dam hard…i like….”
Although the team of Alberto Contador was able to make up some of the disastrous time loss he experienced in yesterday’s crash, it wasn’t enough to place him in the top 10 riders. Currently he is 1 minute 42 seconds behind the leader and in 75th position.
Team HTC Highroads lost one of its best riders Bernie Eisel on a tricky turn before the first checkpoint, damaging the American team’s chances for a win today, who came in fifth in today’s stage. “Well that didn’t go to plan today but that’s the#TDF Feel sorry for Burnie who crashed in the first corner. He is ok and no problems,” wrote Mark Renshaw.
With a twist of humor, after lamenting their loss with the words, “Bollocks,” HTC Highroads’ Mark Cavendish tweeted, “For you ladies, I will try and get a twitpic of Bernies wound tonight. It’s on his bottom…..”
Still six of their riders are now in the top 19 positions, including Tony Martin and Mark Cavendish.
Team Radioshack didn’t do as well as we predicted, with a 6th place finish, putting Andreas Kloden, Chris Horner and Levi Leipheimer in 20th, 21st, and 22nd position overall.
As Lance Armstrong famously put it in 2009 during their riveting Tour battle while on the same Astana team, you are only as strong as your team.
Play by Play
It was a roller coaster ride for viewers and riders all day. First Team Saxobank Sungard went out, establishing an aggressive time of 25 minutes, 16 seconds on this 23 km course in les Essarts.
But it wasn’t good enough. Soon their time was being eclipsed by other teams who bettered them by seconds, (see our blow by blow coverage of the stage).
As the stage carried on, it soon became clear that the real fight would be between Team Garmin Cervelo who came in with an aggressive time of 24 minutes and 14 seconds. That was already a good two minutes ahead of the Spaniard’s team, and in the end would prove to be the best.
There were high hopes for Team Sky, Team HTC Highroad, and Team RadioShack. All stood to gain top positions for their riders, and a possible Yellow Jersey today.
Team Sky did well, coming in third overall, and placing their rider Geraint Thomas in the fourth position overall for the General Classification.
“Great performance today from All the boys, we gave everything and couldn’t have done anymore. The stronger Team won today, congratulations,” wrote Bradley Wiggins, Britain’s time trialing champion from his Twitter page.
But in the case of HTC Highroad, they lost one of their best riders early in the 23 km course, Bernie Eiser, which took the wind out of their sails.
And Team RadioShack just could not make the cut, coming in 6th overall.
A comment by the RadioShack team the day before foreshadowed their standing when they said it took them 10 minutes to make it to the first time check.
Behind Garmin Cervelo, BMC Racing was really the team to put in a great effort as most of their team are not great time trialists.
