NYC BikeShare to Host Open Houses Through October

Alta Bike Share, now more commonly known as NYC BikeShare, will be hosting some information sessions for its upcoming bike share to be launched in spring 2012 in New York.

The bike share program is expected to reach 600 locations and 10,000 bicycles in its first year, with the first bicycles becoming available in the summer of 2012. This evening there will be a presentation at the Community Board 4 transportation committee meeting.

NYC BikeShare is expected to open in Manhattan below 79th St. from the east to the west sides and in select areas of Brooklyn in 2012, with the other boroughs on the drafting board, but not confirmed for the following years.

Alta Bicycle Share, a subsidiary of Alta Planning and Design, has already installed and is managing bike share programs in Washington, DC, Boston, MA, and Melbourne, Australia. They were one of the six companies that submitted RFP’s to the Department of Transportation in New York this spring, and will be operating the system as a not for profit. The company will be using bicycles provided by the Public Bike System Co., which also provides the 3-speed, sturdy bikes in London, Montreal, and Toronto, Canada.

Below is the schedule for October and November. Sessions are open to the public.
